Legal Empowerment of the Poor (LEP)
In 2008, a UN commission concluded that Legal Empowerment of the Poor (LEP) would provide an important mechanism towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. LEP is a process of systemic change through which the poor and excluded become able to use the law, the legal system, and legal services to protect and advance their rights and interests as citizens and economic actors. By expanding and deepening universal legal protection, poor people will be better able to free themselves from poverty. Effective access to legal rights enables the modern market economy to function, and enables the poor to better their own condition. The four common pillars identified by the Commission are: access to justice and the rule of law, property rights, labour rights and business rights. Click here for more information.
